Xamk – South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences and Independent Business Group: Digital remote air traffic control towers can contribute to securing the future of Finland’s smaller airports, according to a recent study by Xamk and IBG. 🛫
Remote and shared air navigation services can improve the operating conditions of small airports when looking further into the future.
💬 “One air navigation services team can serve several airports from a single location, which can significantly reduce airport-specific costs in the long term and enable more flexible airport opening hours,” says Project Manager Eija Joro from the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences.
The digital infrastructure also supports Finland’s crisis preparedness and creates conditions for future aviation, such as unmanned and electric aviation.
💬 “The state is the biggest beneficiary of a resilient airport network. An investment of up to about one million euros in this technology per airport is justifiable, which corresponds to only a fraction of the price of a kilometre of motorway,” says Kim Silander (IBG), author of the report.
The study was carried out in cooperation with Independent Business Group (IBG) as part of the Growth from Modern Air Traffic to Eastern Finland project. The project is co-funded by the European Union and public and private actors. The aim of the project is to identify how developing technology can be used to build new operating models to meet the needs of changing air traffic in the future.
